Teachers In 19 Schools In Kuching To Implement Nine-hour Work Day Pilot Project

KUCHING, Nov 13 (Bernama) -- The Education Minister has chosen 19 schools here for the implementation of the pilot project requiring teachers to work nine hours a day beginning January next year.

Sarawak Teachers' Union (STU) president William Ghani Bina said the number comprised 11 primary schools and eight secondary schools.

The primary schools are SK Chung Hua No 2, SK Chung Hua Sungai Buda, SK Bako, SK Bandar Semariang, SK Combine, SK Kenyalang, SK Madrasah Datuk Haji Abdul Kadir Hassan, SK Satria Jaya, SK St. Mary and SK St Theresa.

Meanwhile, the secondary schools are SMK Bandar Kuching No.2, Kuching Arts School, SMK Tabuan Jaya, Kolej Kolej Datu Patinggi Abang Haji Abdillah, SMK St Joseph, Batu Lintang Vocational College, SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor Stampin and SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Zaidi.

"It is hoped that the implementation of the pilot project will give the real picture of the burden shouldered by teachers," he told Bernama here.

William said this was because many did not know that most teachers had to work not just from Monday to Friday, but sometimes up to Sunday, especially when they were entrusted with responsibilities to handle co curriculum activities or to attend courses and other school activities.

Apart from Sarawak, the pilot project would also be implemented in Melaka, Pahang and Johor, involving more than 5,000 teachers and 104 schools.

Under the pilot project, the morning shift teachers are required to work from 7.30am to 4.30pm, while the afternoon shift teachers, from 9.30am to 6.30pm.
